Gut check: Are you ready to optimize your metabolism, significantly boost your energy, and improve your overall well-being? Then it’s time to get started with Nutrisense. I’ve personally used the Nutrisense program (multiple times) and it’s been an absolute game changer in helping me understand how my body responds to what I’m eating—and I am a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Board-Certified Holistic Health Coach, meaning I know a lot about the body. But because everyone's body is different and can respond differently to the same foods that's why I believe it's important to use a continue glucose monitor (see the device on my arm in the picture below).

Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM)

Your Nutrisense journey starts with a CGM (continuous glucose monitor), which is a small device that stays on the back of your arm to monitor your glucose levels in response to food, meal timing, exercise, sleep, and stress. It’s easy, it’s painless, and it allows you to track your blood-sugar levels in real-time, then get personalized insights through the Nutrisense app. The app is great for people like me, who want a data-driven approach to a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Glucose 101

Glucose (also referred to as blood sugar) is a vital source of energy for your body's cells, and the body tightly regulates the amount of it in your blood to ensure that you’re within a normal range—typically between 70-99 mg/dL when fasting, and up to 140 mg/dL after meals. Imbalances in glucose levels can lead to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes.

Besides preventing disease, maintaining stable blood sugar levels has a lot of benefits:

  1. Better energy levels: When blood-sugar levels are stable, the body can efficiently utilize glucose for energy, leading to more consistent and sustained energy levels all day.
  2. Improved cognitive function: The brain relies on glucose for energy, and stable blood-sugar levels help ensure it gets a steady supply, helping to improve memory, attention, and concentration.
  3. Better weight management: When blood-sugar levels are stable, the body is better able to regulate appetite and reduce cravings for sugary or high-carbohydrate foods.

My Nutrisense Journey

As someone who knows a lot about movement, nutrition and overall health I was excited to try out Nutrisense because seeing real time data can help you improve or get confirmation of the foods you are eating and how they are affecting your health. The first time I used my Nutrisense CGM, I discovered that stevia raised my blood-sugar level much more than eating honey. That really surprised me!

Armed with this new information I decided to do some small adjustments with my nutrition and began tracking the best combinations of foods and types of foods to avoid the ill effects of blood-sugar spikes throughout the day. Another surprise was that drinking wine at night affected my glucose levels the next day. Even when I ate the exact same food as the day before, my body did not handle it as well—just a small amount of sugar would cause a blood-sugar spike because my body was tired. It just goes to show how everything is connected and even when eating “perfectly” your body may not be processing as well as it could due to poor sleep.

I also love that the program paired me with a dietician, who is there to provide expert guidance, help you interpret the data and assists you in building sustainable healthy habits. Through Nutrisense, I was able to tweak my diet to dial in what best fuels and nourish my body.

Prevent Prediabetes

Knowledge is power, and knowing your body’s own metabolic trends is an incredibly powerful way to improve whole-body health while preventing (or reversing!) prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition that occurs when blood-sugar levels are higher than normal, and it can lead to type 2 diabetes if left untreated. In fact, the CDC states that 15 to 30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes in 3 to 5 years, and are at increased risk for heart disease and stroke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 88 million American adults, or one in three individuals, have pre-diabetes. What’s scary is that pre-diabetes often has no symptoms, so many people with the condition may not even know they have it. That’s where Nutrisense comes in. Prediabetes is a reversible condition, so by monitoring and analyzing what causes your blood-sugar to spike, you can return your blood sugar levels to normal—and keep them there by making lifestyle changes!

Flex Your Metabolic Flexibility

Personally, one of my most important goals in joining Nutrisense was strengthening my metabolic flexibility. Most people outside of health coaching circles might not know what that is, but it refers to the body's ability to switch between using different energy sources (such as glucose and fatty acids) in response to changes in nutritional and energy demands.

Being metabolically flexible means that your body can efficiently and effectively utilize different sources of energy depending on the situation. For example, during periods of low-carb intake, the body can shift to using stored fats as a source of energy instead of relying on glucose from food; likewise, when you load up on carbs, your body can switch back to using glucose as the main energy source. This is an important aspect of metabolic health, and crucial for maintaining stable blood-sugar levels or preventing insulin resistance.

Benefits of Good Metabolic Flexibility

Having good metabolic flexibility comes with a number of health benefits, like lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes, better weight management, and reduced inflammation. It also plays a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. In contrast, having poor metabolic flexibility can lead to chronic inflammation, high blood sugar levels, and increased risk of chronic diseases.

Nutrisense gives you real-time insights into your metabolic flexibility, along with proven strategies for improving it (which include regular exercise, reducing your intake of processed and high-sugar foods, and getting sufficient sleep). As you do so, your body may actually be able to tolerate the very foods that previously caused a blood-sugar spike.
